JAZZ: A BRIEF HISTORY

RECENTLY, ONE OF MY SONS ASKED THE OTHER, "HAVE YOU EVER REALLY LISTENED TO THELONIOUS MONK?"

THEIR NASCENT INTEREST CONFIRMS THAT ALL THOSE YEARS OF INFLICTING MY PREFERRED PLAYLISTS ON THEIR CAPTIVE EARS HAVE YIELDED FERTILE SPROUTS.
IN HONOR OF THE MATURATION OF THEIR CULTURAL SENSIBILITIES, I PREPARED THIS BRIEF OVERVIEW OF THE HISTORY OF JAZZ. THIS IS BY NO MEANS INTENDED TO BE COMPREHENSIVE BUT RATHER, AN INTRODUCTION FOR THE UNINITIATED AND A WELCOME RESPITE FOR THE JAZZOPHILE.

WITH THE RECENT PROLIFERATION OF JAZZ PERFORMANCES ON VIDEO AND THE PLETHORA OF MAGNIFICENT RECORDINGS TO CHOOSE FROM, THERE WERE MANY DIFFICULT OMISSIONS BUT, WE BEGIN WHERE WE BEGIN AND END WHERE WE END. HOPEFULLY, ALL WILL FIND SOMETHING WORTHWHILE TO ENJOY.
